Mobile phones are increasingly being used in medical diagnosis. For example, a few weeks ago I wrote about how a mobile phone could be inexpensively turned into a microscope, and be used to send the resulting pictures to a lab or a specialist for diagnosis. Mikael Huss has a post on his Follow the Data blog that adds other diagnostic uses for mobile phones. He points to an application being developed at MIT’s Media Lab that will listen to a person’s voice in order to detect signs of depression. In addition, certain types of coughing or sneezing can help detect a serious ailment. With iCough, you cough or sneeze into the phone, and the program offers advice to the doctor on your condition. I could have used that help today. (GW)
