2010 Horizon Report is Out

The newest Horizon Report is available, a collaboration between The New Media Consortium and EDUCAUSE. It looks at emerging learning technologies for higher education and gives timeframes for when they see each technology becoming mainstream. Here are their projections:

One Year or Less:

  • Mobile Computing
  • Open Content

Two to Three Years

  • Electronic Books
  • Simple Augmented Reality

Four to Five Years:

  • Gesture-based computing
  • Visual Data Analyis

Considering that in my reports from 2006 to the present I have identified over 60 learning technologies that are in play or coming in the next 5 years, this report is a pretty conservative projection. Mobile computing is already exploding, Open Content is already here (see Stephen Downes for over 120 posts on this topic), and the coming year will see lots more e-book readers and tablets that read electronic books. And, I think that Visualization of Data is already here – see the VizThink group, the work of Ben Fry, and the VisualComplexity.com site. Perhaps the problem is that it will take years for higher education to change enough to use these tools.
