Bob Sutton describes the path to becoming a good boss. This path requires passing through three phases: simplistic, complex, and profoundly simple.
The first simplistic phase consists of perceiving that being a boss is very easy. This phase occurs in the early stages of being a boss. It’s usually accompanied by a disdain for past bosses, viewing then as incompetent idiots.
The complex phase occurs when a person has been a boss for long enough to feel overwhelmed with the incessant challenges of the job: management issues, financial constraints, personality clashes, etc.
The profoundly simple phase occurs when the boss achieves an acceptance of the complexity of the job and is able to “develop a simple mindset and master seemingly obvious moves.” (RN)
