Physics-Based Simulation of Sand Clouds for Helicopter Training

by Tom Werner on December 4, 2009

Helicopter brownoutIf you’re interested in complex simulation, here’s a fascinating paper from the 2008 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC).

It’s about simulating the clouds of sand stirred up by helicopters.

Military helicopter pilots need to practice landing in these ‘brownout’ clouds.

The paper shows how they accurately simulate the physics of the brownout clouds.

Here’s the video presentation.

Fascinating… (TW)

This is some helicopter training I wish I would have had when starting out. That kind of blind flight training is invaluable.
