The British Ministry of Defence is providing new recruits with Nintendo DS handheld games consoles. The devices are loaded with software called Operation Numerika, a game designed to develop basic math skills.

“We undertook extensive research into recruits’ needs and preferences. Their familiarity with computer game environments and mobile gaming platforms meant mobile learning was ideal.”

Military recruits join the army as young as 17 years of age. Many of these young people have had prior experience with games devices, making their adoption easier. (RN)
