How Augmented Reality Might Change Shopping

by Tom Werner on October 26, 2009

A fun video from Cisco showing a vision of how augmented reality might change shopping.

The implications for learning some day (soon)?

  • The hands-free interface would allow more natural physical movement.
  • The ability to instantly change appearance would add to the realism of in-person role plays.
  • And endless possibilities for electronic performance support.

Via Gary Hayes’ description of 16 uses of augmented reality. (TW)

Cool video, but it begs the question- why bother going to the store? What use is the sales person? Microsoft’s project Natal (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/projectnatal/) suggests that you’ll be able to do this with an Xbox, using your friend as a second opinion.
Either way augmented reality is coming, but I wonder which company will end up on top?

Agree, more or less. If I use this augmented-reality approach as an equivalent of catalog shopping, i.e., doing the actual trying-on at home, then no need for the store or salesperson.

It will be interesting to see how “real” augmented reality will be able to get. For example, will it be able to show how two different sizes of the same shirt will look on me? Will it be able to show how a pair of pants REALLY looks on me? Interesting stuff…
