Control without participation

flightdeck1Anne Marie McEwan writes about social network analysis tools (SNA) (specifically SONAR) that help businesses “identify, measure and manage social networks, information flows and expertise.” Why are such tool good? They help identify and facilitate connections among employees. I love looking at the data produced from this type of tool. Ann Marie’s view is that the level of “open, trusting, transparent cultures” needed is a huge problem and also questions whether or not monitoring is sinister or seriously useful. She provides a quote from a research project which I think gets at the heart of the matter:

If ICT-based control continues to be seen as a management prerogative, and the monitoring information is not shared with employees, then this is likely to become a divisive and damaging issue.

What do you think? I just think data should be shared. (JC)
