Comparison of the number of registered users among large LMSs

by Janet Clarey on June 15, 2009

Jeffrey Goldman took a look at Moodle stats and noted their reported number of registered users is over 32 million.

Moodle:
Registered users: 32,815,756
Number of countries: 210

I took a few minutes to compare that number to some of the larger commercial systems in corporations today and found this information within our LMS KnowledgeBase:

GeoLearning:
Registered users: 12,000,000
Number of countries: 7

Mzinga:
Registered users: 27,000,000
Number of countries: 160

NetDimensions:
Registered users: 8,000,000
Number of countries: 43

Plateau:
Registered users: 10,000,000
Number of countries: 19

Saba:
Registered users: 17,000,000
Number of countries: 53

SumTotal:
Registered users: 19,000,000
Number of countries: 50+

Keep in mind though that Moodle includes a larger base of non-corporate (education) entities compared to the commercial systems listed.

Thank you for referencing my post. And for getting these other LMS numbers.

Moodle does have a very large non-corporate base. Although, I think there may be an increase of corporate users out there, but it is not reflected in Moodle’s Stats. At least the ones they display at Moodle.org. The problem with identifying corporate users is that Moodle’s stats only show users who publicly registered their site. I am under the impression that because so many companies are keeping Moodle on an Intranet, they are not registering their sites. Thus being left off Moodle Stats.

I think we would have to really dig deep to get accurate numbers on corporate use of Moodle.

Thanks again,

Jeff

Agree Jeff. That’s always a problem with self-reporting (in this case registering a site). I’d love to dig more into the stats.

You probably want to check up on those numbers for the various folks as things tend to change quite often. E.g., here at GeoLearning, the number of users has increased quite a bit and the number of countries is over 200 now. (Nothing like a little international push!) I am guessing some of the other vendors have differences as well.

That’s why we ask you to update your information every year : )
