Jay Cross is attending the Online Marketing World conference in San Francisco, and has posted a set of slides from a presentation by Jeremiah Owyang, Senior Analyst at the research firm Forrester. Jeremiah identifies 6 levels of participation in social media, and breaks the levels down by categories of Adults and Youth in the USA, and Adults in China and Europe. Then there is a breakdown of age and adoption of social media. Of course youth are represented far more at the top levels of participation. Jay’s concluding comment is: “Last Sunday’s New York Times had a six-panel cartoon of two guys standing under a street sign saying “Wall St.” A wave appears to the right of them. It gets bigger panel by panel and finally engulfs them. Floating away, one says to the other, “Whoa, didn’t see that coming.” If the participation-by-age chart above means nothing to you, you’ll soon be able to say the same thing.”
