Nice Work, If You Can Get It…

Composer Bruce Adolphe recently commissioned Yo-Yo Ma to collaborate on a new piece of music based on books by neuroscientist Antonio Damasio. He asked Ma and Damasio to “collaborate on a work that would combine text, music and imagery of brain activity to evoke the evolution of the human mind.”  The resulting piece of music is “Self Comes to Mind”, a 30-minute work for cello and two percussionists, with video imagery based on brain scans and with texts by Dr. Damasio. It premiered at the American Museum of Natural History in early May.  You can hear a sample of the music on the NPR Radio website. (GW)
