I’m a sucker for great visuals. I also love maps, an obsession from childhood when I would pore over the details of the latest insert from National Geographic magazine. So I enoyed the post called “Lens Tools and Fisheye Map Browsing” by cartographer Zachary Forest Johnson (via O’Reilly Radar).
The problem with maps is striking the right balance between clarity and detail. Cartifact of Los Angeles has recently released Cartifact Maps, a Flash-based tilemaps viewer, that allows the user to move a magnifying lens over an on-screen map to blow up the details.
Zachary points us to several nice examples of the use of magnifying lens and “fisheye lens” for browsing online maps. He also references a blog article by Andy Woodruff on a variety of map panning and zooming methods.
Finally, one of the commentators on this post led me to the gorgeous online display technology of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) called Artscope. Enjoy! (GW)
