What is a Community of Practice?

by Gary Woodill on March 6, 2009

cop2Nancy White grapples with the issue of what is and isn’t a community of practice (CoP), the fifth part of a series of posts on the topic of CoPs. (Her post tells you how to find the other parts). In this post Nancy asks a number of questions, and provides answers. The questions are:

  • Is a “class” or “cohort of learners” a community?
  • Is a group of people who all took a specific elearning offering – at any time, alone or together, a CoP?
  • Is a team a CoP?
  • Is a CoP the same thing as a (social) network?
  • Is a CoP the group of people who generate content on a website?
  • Is a portal a CoP?

Nancy provides thoughtful answers to each of these questions, so if they match any of your questions about communities of practice, check out this post. (GW)
