Jay Cross makes a subtle but powerful point here.
He says it’s time to drop the preacher-and-congregation paradigm of learning.
This is a big idea, although probably familiar to some (i.e., be a guide-on-the-side rather than a sage-on-the-stage).
But Jay takes it a step further.
What if we stopped calling them ‘learners’?
Maybe the term ‘learners’ encourages us to think of them as, you know, deficient.
I think Jay is — gently and thoughtfully — getting at that slightly snobby, snooty mindset of you-have-gaps-and-I-need-design-instruction-for-you.
In this age where everyone is continuously producing and foraging for information, we need more paradigms than that.
