There’s a lot of talk lately about how the high price of fuel and our collective attempts to lower our carbon footprints will drive a big increase in the number of people who work from home or satellite offices near their homes. WebWorkerDaily just posted an article about how some teleworkers are choosing to return to the office. Reasons include:
- A desire to keep work and life separate
- A fear of missing out on career opportunities due to low visibility
- Social isolation
An IDC analyst is quoted as saying that teleworking is often a temporary arrangement. People do it for a while and then return to office life. (RN)

I currently work in the office full-time, however at my previous job I worked from home full-time because I was the only employee on the east coast. With the rest of my group in the Pacific time zone I often needed to work late hours to accommodate meetings and had no work related need to be in the office. As a single mother working from home afforded me a lot of advantages; however after about 6-months I felt like my job was taking over my personal life. Because I was at home I’d often continue working late into the night and on weekends. I also staying in my PJs or sweats most of the time and began to neglect my domestic duties. I then decided I needed to create some order and balance. I chose to work from home three days per week and go into the office two days. This seemed to put things back on track. Shortly after I changed jobs and coming back into the office full-time was a major adjustment.

The answer for the Question is also given in the same blog. Telecommuting can only be a part time affair and telecommuters will definitely come back to office, for several reasons like, meeting their bosses, getting updated on the projects, etc, which can also be done on IMs but personal interactions will definitely yield better results.
