Ambient Awareness

by Gary Woodill on September 19, 2008

Brandon Hall Research is a very distributed company, with most of us living in a different geographical regions. This makes socializing challenging, and is something I miss from my days of “going to the office.” But, I have one colleague who usually says “good morning” using instant messaging when I sign on in the morning, and will frequently (metaphorically) stick her head over my “virtual cubicle” to chat or ask a question. Betsy Carroll comments on a NY Times article about the social effects of frequent sharing of tidbits of personal and work-related information through such sites as Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, and Twitter. She calls the results of this practice “ambient awareness” and suggests that it is an important technique for virtual team leaders to learn. She has a set of suggestions for the use of frequent short contacts for team building. (GW)
