Edge as an Emerging Metaphor

by Gary Woodill on January 13, 2009

I have been seeing the word “edge” being used as a metaphor in the writing of different people in the learning field, including John Hagel III and John Seely Brown’s 2005 book, The Only Sustainable EdgeLilia Efimova shares an excerpt from her doctoral dissertation with us where she considers a “blog as an edge zone”. She trys to “explain the ‘front porch’ nature of blogging and its impact for emergent social processes.”  She continues:

“Weblogs are similar to the edge zones in cities. As a personal space in public a weblog provides a unique opportunity for combining the characteristics of both – being in control and feeling protected in one’s own space and being exposed to others and open for a communication.”

Interesting ideas. I look forward to reading more. (GW)
