Generation Integration

by Gary Woodill on January 8, 2009

Roberta Matuson, president of Human Resources Solutions, recently gave a speech to the Boston CEO Club that highlighted five things companies can do to engage employees across the generations. Here they are:

  1. Provide opportunities to do interesting work.
  2. Offer flexible work options so employees can on-ramp and off-ramp as life events dictate changes.
  3. Adjust your benefit plans to reflect the needs of your population.
  4. Encourage collaboration-Think mentor programs and reverse mentor programs.
  5. Pay competitive wages. Don’t believe everything you hear. Money still matters and it does so now more than ever with the rising cost of fuel, food and debt.

Stephen Gill adds further commentary to these ideas. It important to note that all talk about the generations is not about the conflicts between them. (GW)

This is a good article but these five things just make me think about the obvious like ‘eat less and exercise more and you’ll lose weight’. I can’t think of any generation that wants uninteresting work, inflexible options, rigid benefits plans, non-collaborative environments, and uncompetitive wages. So I guess I’m saying the generational factor is moot.
