Illustrated Timeline of Co-evolution

Jay Cross reports on the Future of Talent retreat in Tiburon, where Eileen Clegg showed an illustrated timeline of co-evolution in Doug Engelbart’s lifetime. Doug who? Engelbart was born in 1925, but is best known for inventing the computer mouse in 1968. He also developed hypertext, networked computers and precursors to GUIs. The graphical timeline is very exciting to those of us who like to see the big picture, because it stretches over five flipchart stands. More importantly, it was used to get participants involved in adding to it, so is a great non-linear technique for teaching. What also excited me was the comment on the chart that Doug Engelbart “deep lifetime passion has been to raise humanity’s ‘collective IQ’ for global problem solving, through his Bootstrap Institute. Doug is working with a team on new software to support this endeavor called Hyperscope. Not all innovation is by the young… (GW)
