Search Many to Many

by Gary Woodill on September 3, 2008

Freebase is a new open source database that is trying to capture much of the world’s knowledge in a such a way that you can interrogate it by making connections between categories, each of which contain many items. The tool to search Freebase is called Parallax, and a video demonstration by research scientist David Huynh gives a glimpse into its power. It is also a good demonstration of a mashup, where the data from Freebase can be put into a Google map or some other form of visualization. For example, if you wanted to know where all (62) children of (18) Republican presidents of the USA went to school (many schools), you normally would have to build your own file by searching for each child and where they went to school. Parallax is able to do this and plot the results in seconds. Check it out and you will be as impressed as I was. (Via Jon Udell) (GW)
