President Obama on the Risks of Technological Distractions

by Richard Nantel on May 11, 2010

In a commencement speech to more than 1,000 graduates at Hampton University in Virginia, President Obama stated that devices such as iPods and XBoxes have not always been good for the cause of strong education.

“With iPods and iPads; Xboxes and PlayStations – none of which I know how to work – information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation.”

The president warned the students against becoming distracted by technology when they are already graduating “at a time of great difficulty for America, and for the world.” (RN)
