Whatever Happened to Performance Support?

by Gary Woodill on August 27, 2008

Whatever happened to performance support? According to Jay Cross, it is alive and well, but “hiding in plain sight.” Jay gives us a personal history of EPSS in this long post, and then argues that the spirit of performance support is what drives Web 2.0. What’s different about this new version of performance support is that it is not produced by experts, but by collaboration with fellow workers. Jay says “We have given up the idea that competence must exist within the person. Competence exists within our collaborators and within the net. [We] …have given up on the idea that knowledge resides within individuals’ heads; it’s collective intelligence.” A thoughtful piece of analysis. (GW)
